can anyone shed any light on what size socket is needed to undo the clamp bolts for the rear down pipe connection to the manifold. also any ideas about not knackering the bolt head whilst trying to free it from rusty captivity.

stewart of the Barker clan - if your reading this i still have the socket you kindly made to adust the engine mounting adustable bolts. i can only access them by removing the tank and so am waiting to the 24k mark to do this. not too far away now. anyone who would like to borrow this tool let me know.

I had to fit a new gasket to the rear downpipe a few weeks back and it cost me ?90 in parts. I ended up having to cut the old clamps off and fit new ones at ?20 each + ?1.50 for bolts. All to change a ?4 gasket  :wallbash:

The problem is that the bolts corrode so much that nothing is left of the head, I think that they were originally either 13mm or 14mm.

I am actually waiting on some sample clamps (see photo) from a supplier which I ordered to see if they would be suitable and to save others from getting ripped of for OEM parts. They work out at ?3.50 each. If you can hang on I will let you know what they look like. They should be here by Monday.

that would be great Stewart. will wait to hear and hope the leak doesnt get bigger. i am left wondering if other bikes have the same problem in which case it must be a good earner for someone.

I think they all do it sooner or later, I rode for ages with no gasket left at all.

I'll let you know as soon as the clamps arrive.

A bit of a result.

I ordered two sizes of clamps as the size ranges straddled the OD of the Vara exhaust at the joint. Both seem to fit OK.

I fitted the smaller one next to the existing Honda one and took the photos below.

?3.50 each (+Postage) to any form members and I'll see what they fetch on Ebay !

The company that I got them from has a minimum order of ?40.

I've got enough to supply anyone that needs them for the moment.

PM me your address and how many you want and we can settle up by paypal or cheque.

Jackotter

have you still got any of these?

I have had the same rusting problem and would like to replace all the rusted clamps on my exhaust system at once as the one joint that is blowing is now has a clamp which is rounded off due to rust and not enough patience with WD40. Being in an awkward place it requires me to remove my whole exhaust system to angle grind it off.

Can you let me know if you have enough left to do the whole system for an '05 XL1000
How much you want for them and a paypal account.

Thanks

Jack
