Last year my main 30 amp fuse blew before this happened I had 1 or 2 starting issues ie flat battery replaced rectifier and battery OK for a short while came out one morning started the bike up ran for a few minutes then everything went dead 30 amp fuse blown put in spare one blew again.
Got taxi to work  >:(
My next door neighbour who was a retired engineer (deceased now god bless)by passed fuse and bike started  :good:
Ran great for a month then coming home from work notice lights were getting dim stopped for petrol bike would not start flat  battery  :batz:
had battery tested next day knackered gave up used other bike put vara to bed for the winter
since then I have been made redundo but over the winter purchased yet another rectifier and battery and a new solenoid (starter relay) tyres chain seat recovered all wiring back how it should be looks nice.
Passed m.o.t been using her for 2 weeks when last week went to lake district for blast out bike cut out battery almost melted :sorry:
Another battery back on but this time i have natural light, petrol and oil light main fuse OK but the small fusebox near the relay 10 amp fuse for the clock i.e speedo etc blows when ignition turned on I dare not start the bike rectifier probably fried again and now I'm skint so need help cos i ant got a clue.

i have a limited knollage how the bike works i have the haynes manual for the bike 1999 T xl 1000 but when it comes to wiring i'm colour blind so useless

Bit of a challenge then :)

Best start with the 10A fuse blowing.

Q has the main 30A fuse been replaced with a fuse, i.e. not 'bypassed'
Q. have you got a meter?
Q. Have you got a female friend who can tell you what the colours are? (women are rarely colour blind)

The short causing the 10A fuse (fuse ?E?) to blow is either a faulty component or damaged wiring or connectors.

From the Haynes diagram it can be seen that this fuse feeds the following components directly: (assuming I haven?t missed any)

?   Clock
?   Temperature gauge
?   Speedometer
?   Neutral light
?   Oil pressure light
?   Fuel indicator light
?   Lighting switch*
?   Horn switch

And feeds the following via switches: (does it blow the fuse with the lights turned off?)

?   Tail lights
?   Side light
?   Horn

*I?m assuming that your bike has a lighting switch, i.e. lights not on all the time, like mine.

You need to isolate as many of these as possible to narrow down the short.

Testing for the short by blowing fuses can get expensive, replace the fuse with a 21W tail light bulb on some wire, It?ll light up if there?s  a short, or you could use your meter to measure resistance to earth on the outgoing side of the fuse terminal.

You?re probably going to have to take the tank off to get at the connectors, unless you?re lucky. There is a 6 way connector that will isolate the gauges and warning lights,  and a 9 way connector that will isolate the lighting and horn switches.

Hope this makes sense, say if not.

Best of luck.

If you skip down to the 125 forum, there was a post on there about 30amp fuse blow and frying rectifiers, turns out that in that case it was the alternator. A decent meter should help your diagnosis.
Walk softly and carry a big stick.

You need to start disconnecting things , I'll sort some drawings out and send them tommorrow. PM me your email and I can send them directly (promise not to sell it to the spam sites) <noway>
Got a meter or meter substitute (a bulb)? <lamp>
Do you have an owners manual? it has a monochrome circuit diagram that would help. Let me know if you haven't.

Thanks for that JP you can email me at (blanked by admin).com my son can help with the colour.

I also have a muliti meter but to be honest not used it much no point really when your colour blind ;D so will have to get a brush up lesson on you tube

Thanks again mate really appreciate your time and effort
