hi guys< I have a 1000 vara, 1999, its suddenly started back fire #sos#ing, Ive had it serviced, plugs, oil, air/oil filters, had the valve clearances checked, they ok, it went ok for about 30 miles then its started again, a flame about a foot long from the o/s pipe, has anyone had any similar problems?  any ideas what will sort it? cheers.

The Speeding Stag

On my old 99 model, it used to back fire, but not as bad as yours sounds, I ended up living with it.
After being in for a service it was fine for a few lmiles then always started again.

Gaskets  :good:

Replace them, 3 I think, and your problem should be solved.

Exhaust gasket failure is a common problem (though Honda claims it isn't). Read this:

The VW clamps are Ok but they don't give 100% grip around the pipe.

These ones do   http://www.honda-varadero-uk.org/forum/index.php?topic=4989.0

B&Q do a good range too, mine have lasted over a year and look like they will last another 2 years. About the same as the OE stuff.
