Hi, I passed my test in August and moved from the baby vara to a smart looking yamaha fzx 750 "baby vmax". Despite booming acceleration and a slick gearbox the electrics were crap and I spent as much time swearing at it as riding it, which wasn't good since I use a bike everyday.

So now I'm on a Honda CB500 and I can get up in the morning w/out fretting that it's going to let me down. And I saved ?100 on insurance, and I made a saving on switching bikes since I sold the fazer for ?1000 and bought the CB for ?800 (so I bought a screen and a scottoiler as well).

So, keep the baby v as long as you want, but shop carefully for your next bike!!

best, Ray

Had the same experience in going from Honda to Suzuki.  My "new to me" Triumph now seems a bit more Honda like.  The baby vara was an extremely well made machine.  My Suzuki (which was a bit older mind) just was'nt.  It was a cracking ride (Sv) but I was always disappointed with something breaking.  It went from major electrical issues and clutch(es), to paint finish rust and carbs icing.  I could have sorted it all out but it would have costed me more than I saved on the equivalent better made machine.  Here's hoping that British is best for the summer...

Is that a daytona 650 'dan? Nice bike..

Since my post about the CB5 I've added heated grips, crash bars, fender extender, and givi top box. Just a belly pan to go. Bombproof -and- bulletproof? I hope so  O0.

It's the 600, but still very nice looking all the same.  As it was prevously owned/run by a local motoring/biking correspondant it has had a number of extras fitted, courtesy of the manufacturers in exchange for a little free press in the mag.  The list is numerous and suffice to say up against a standard 650 it would probably perform favourably, although maybe not the 675.  The aftermarket undertray gives it a better look than the standard rear end.  Any flat fuelling evident in the original has been sorted as she pulls quite well from down low (although not like a twin.)  I have only done a few hundred miles on it, and mostly with my tractor mates who all think it's just silly.  She's better for distance than the SV, mostly due to the lack of vibes.  She's much better in the corners, mostly because unlike my old SV (40,000 miles) I can feel the road through the seat and bars very clearly.  The only problem with having a mint bike with every concievable addition is that I can only make it worse.  So I am not going to think about it.  As long as it lasts as long as the finance will take to pay off, I will just concentrate on having fun.
