Temp Gauge faffing about

just back from France 2340 miles from leavin home temp gauge read funny . only 2 blocks showimg after 20 mins riding and on blasting down the motorway it drops to 1 block showing. even when in south france in 26c it was reading either 1 or 2 on the gauge then in slow traffic went up to 3 . fan came on occassionally so that works still. anybody have similar problem, is it sensor related or problem in the dash ?
