HISS Antenna fix

I like most have experienced random non starter issues with FI light staying on but a couple of days ago things allot a lot worse.

She cut out on me coming up the driveway, than again going round a corner and then whilst doing 60 along the carriageway. :o

At the side of the road I found that the FI light would go on/off when the handle bars were turned and when moving the wires around the ignition.

I assumed it was the HISS antenna but after finding out that a new antenna was going to cost me ?127 I decided to try and make sure the antenna was definitely at fault.

After removing the antenna and its protective plastic around the wires I could clearly see that there was a bend in the wires about half way along and 3 of the wires would bend very easily telling me that the wire inside had broken.

After cutting out the bad bits and soldering together the bike started and runs as it should.

The bike has done 56,000 miles so I guess I can expect more of these wear and tear issues in the near future!

worth checking if you have similar problems

The Prodded Dog

I can still do all the things I could when I was 21, but now it is with less teeth.

Brilliant diagnosis and fix Mav. Was the harness badly routed from new, or had someone made 'improvements' ?
My '08 model had a miss-fire and also cut out ,drastically on several occasions. The problem was never solved and I traded the bike...it's still out there somewhere and I have tried to find out if it was ever cured. This HISS stuff was beyond my knowledge until now...thanks.

It didn't look badly routed and cable clips looked like they had not been disturbed since new and we're not too tight.

The four wire are protected by a loose plastic slieve and at the ignition end there is an addition hard plastic protective tube which is only 5 or so inches long.  The break in the wires occured where this hard plastic ends, just before the first securing clip.  The turning of the handle bars concentrated the bending at that point.  Probably would not have happened if hard plastic was longer.
