Title: Tail light problem, 2001 Varadero 125
Post by: BABY V RIDER on 03/07/11 - 23:03:00
Hi everyone, Please Please HELP #sos#, I have recently bought my Baby V and have a wee problem with my tail light. When I have my

lights on I dont have a rear tail light, I have renewed the double filament bulb that works my brake light (that works) with no help, I had a

side light out so renewed that so have all lights working apart from tail light, PLEASE PLEASE can someone give a total NOVICE some help or

guidance as the local dealer in GLASGOW (Victor Devine) wants ?65 per hour just to find the fault which is way out of my budget. So untill I

get it sorted its only daytime riding for me  :'(  someone suggested it could be an earth problem and told me to get the Haynes manual to

look at the wiring diagram which I did, but to be honest it looks like I am reading the map of the London underground, so if I can get some

pointers so I can go to a mechanic and say what I think it is Im hopeing I dont get ripped off.  Sorry if this doesnt make sense, but just

thinking there is help out there. A car mechanic I know said he can run a wire from front light to back light and that would sort it?? but not

wanting to trash my bike.

Cheers Paul

Hi Paul
I've just got my hands on a xl125 schematic (thanks **) so I'll print it big and have a look. In the meantime the idea of wiring the front (pilot) lights to the rear is OK, if its done properly I can't see it doing any harm. It can't be an earth fault as the brake light is working and it shares an earth in common with the tail light.
back soon

OK, It looks like the problem is at the rear of the bike, under the seat probably. There is somewhere a 9 pole connector that has coming out of it the wires to the turn signals and the stop/tail bulb. The Blue wire with the brown stripe (Bl/Br on your diagram) is the feed to the tail light. The fault is probably in the connector or the bulb holder. On the other side of the connector you'll probably see two Bl/Br wires, one of them is the feed to the license plate light. (is this working? ) there should also be a Bl/Br wire to the rear brake switch that is connected in the connector or spliced in nearby.

locate and inspect these wires and connectors. If there's nothing visibly wrong try waggling them about with the light switched on...see if it flashes on, might be a dirty connection, even (not likely) a wire broken inside its plastic sheath.

No luck?
next disconnect the 9 way connector and clean the pins and sockets. A tin of switch cleaner and some matchsticks are handy here ::)

If you still have no luck its time to start measuring things. Its easy, you don't even need a meter. But let us know how you get on  first.

b.t.w  I'm basing this on my recently acquired diagram. (which is a FI model, but I don't imagine that the lights changed much.) so may have missed something vis-a-vis the physical position of the components.

p.s. If anyone has a service or owners manual they could lend me I'll put it to good use.

well, its illegal to ride it on the road, so probably best to have one if you don't want to attract attention of the wrong sort.  :batz: (also works for too small a number plates and excessively loud exhausts )  But more to the point, it suggests the bike's been modified, so could have some bearing on present problem.

<doh> What a plank I am.....  I done all of the above by taking nearly everything off the bike and checking just about every wire but with no joy, went to a small motorcycle garage who gave me a price of ?25 per hour, Not to bad I thought, so went to speak with my mate who checked the wireing with his multi meter thing and said its your bulb? (new bulb from honda ... it cant be that as I have just changed it) so we changed it again with one of his bulbs from his garage which had a slightly longer lead connection and wham, I have a rear tail light  :) so JP  <worship thanks for all your effort and time to get me on the road
many thanks
<thanks>  Newbie to riding Paul

Glad it's working. I've had that on bulbs, bought some MES mains bulbs  from Asda to replace the two in my cooker hood, didn't work so started delving into the wiring, it came back (hours later) to the bulbs in the end. Turned out the central contacts were a bit short, bought a different make and all was fine.

moral of the story...well not sure. Expect the unexpected? No, probably not.

Be a good idea to get yourself a meter. Basic electrics is pretty simple really, You'll get the hang of it. I think the Haynes manual has some useful fault finding stuff including use of meters and such.
