Does anyone know what parts can be transferred without too much work from the Africa Twin to an early Varadero 1000? I have heard that the front suspension and wheel will work, but wondered if any of the bodywork or tank can also be transferred to make a hardcore Twinadero?

On of the mechanics at Stafford bikes did a lot of work on a twindero

Have a look here http://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/varadero/27731-twindero-born.html

He did sell it and it popped back up on the forum. Seems to have done a great job. Some stuff really needs some knowledge but it will give you an idea.
Also bear in mind - the Selling price of the bike once you have modified will not reflect the total of the extra work you have put in. The one in Stafford bikes did take a while to sell.

Personally , I thought of doing this but I took the vara ofroad (easy firetrack) and decided that, as most of the time I would doing this on my own, the vara is far too heavy to pick up. I worked out what it would cost to make the vara lighter and more ofroad (Tyres, 21in front wheel, front forks to match, lighter exhaust) and then went and bought an Africa Twin. It's much much much lighter and I can pick it up easily on my own.
Best of both worlds now.

Cheers for the reply. My XL1000 was bought only recently as a "stolen/recovered" on e-bay. The previous owner had done a fair job of sprucing it up for as little money as poss but the top fairing section has deep gouges, the mid section is missing completely, the tank is dented and currently all is sprayed silk black. The front left fork slider is missing half fd the upper caliper mount, and my local Honda dealer cannot get a replacement until December.
I was simply wondering what mods I could do, again at low cost to get  myself on the road, and had been thinking about Baglux cover to hide the tank dents, and maybe remove fairing completely, replacing lights with aftermarket unit. However the next problem comes with mounting the existing instruments or replacing them with alternatives.
All ideas welcome! :-\

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I would estimate the value of my Vara at about ?1000 max if broken. Have just spent over ?350 replacing bent valves etc caused by cam chain tensioner failure within sixty miles of buying bike. Coincidentally this was when I noticed the caliper mount problem. It was fine when I inspected pre-purchase.
Vara for scrap/repair anyone ?
