which screen works?

Having read all the suggestions on the uk and international forums about which screen modification works I'm not much wiser. It seems a lottery. I would like to meet up with anyone who has a screen that actually works on a 99 - 02 model. The MRA seems to be a good improvement on the later varadero but the one for the 99 only adjusts up and down (ie not tilt ) and even then only by 50mm. It's too expensive to buy and discover it doesn't help. I have been fooling about with bits of perspex as suggested by jelly re homemade extension or laminar lip but no real improvement yet. My problem is mostly noise. Above 60 wind roar is v bad.  Not a helmet problem. Got off varadero straight onto my other bike (speed triple with tiny cowl ) much less noise.  I have been riding along crouching down standing up etc. This makes me think screen should be 9" lower or 9" taller or flipped up a h*ll of a lot.  FYI  I am just over 6'

Just a suggestion from left field about "screen" noise/turbulence.
Don't forget the mirrors are stuck out there in the airflow and must disturb the smooth passage of air.
If they create vortices of high pressure air it will rush in to fill the low pressure area created by the screen. I have experienced hail being sucked into behind the screen rather than blasted into my body and face. Weird!!
I have experimented with using an outstretched hand to try and sense where the buffeting has come from but to no avail. I need a wind tunnel! When I had a Fireblade I noticed that there was much less wind noise despite it having a much smaller screen. I had a Givi taller screen on my 01 plate and for my height, 6' 1" improved over standard but I could never say it was eradicated unless I crouched down behind it.

Some interesting points here :

Quote " But, surprisingly, one of the largest sources of noise came from air rushing around the chin cavity of the helmet."

I wonder what happen if I click on this - Ooops

Not on your bike they won't...

So if you made the screen bigger you'd go faster  ::)

Ive seen TPD recently and I can honestly say its been a while since he's seen anything being sucked in any direction..... as for sticking yer arm out to create a sensor to feel the buffeting of a vortice....well I never....it must be an IAM thing... I always assumed that when Max used to do this unusual hand/arm posture it was a 'camp biker' thing rather than an experiment to prevent wind....mind you, wind turbulence would have been a real problem for that young man..... ::)
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path..... and leave a trail...!

.....and remember, "Light travels faster than the speed of sound, which is why some people appear bright until they speak"

Can I respectfully request that any members residing in the Banbury/Oxford area have to request permission to post pisstaking responses to perfectly valid comments made by mature motorcycle riders in response to valid questions????

I have done back to back tests of standard, MRA with a flap and Givi tall screen. The best screen for me at 6'2" is the Givi tall screen. The MRA gives similar results with wind noise but the Givi is more rain protective. I tested them all on both ride heights with the higher one being the better. The MRA one is better to see over on steep hills where the Givi one you need to look round. I do have bar risers fitted and these too make a difference in as much as they put you in a slightly noisier riding position.

There was some talk a while ago about a Suzuki Burgman screen being the answer. If anyone wants to try one I have a standard 650 Burgman screen, shaped and drilled to fit the later Varadero.
I will accept ?20 for it, but you would have to collect it from Dorset.

After farting about with bits of perspex shaped in the oven and bolted to the top of the standard screen, I ended up with a good improvement with a flip top measuring 65 cm from bottom to top.

Bought screen on ebay for ?81.99 incl delivery to Norn Iron which is a 65 cm flip.

It's about as good as I'm going to get for me (183cm tall). The seller agreed to put the black bit round the bottom the same as the standard item (at no extra cost)

I'd recommend this for the price.  Seller is Flowrider and ebay link is

They also do a version for the later model.
