Hi, booked ferry form Hull to Zeebrugge on May 26th, route intended is through Germany- Switzerland then Italy.Just looking at previous threads about passes through Alps and being closed to bikers because of snow, if this is the case what alternative is there via tunnels or any other advice would be great. I had thought about soft panniers but i am going to invest in some honda hard 29litre panniers, just because of the security aspect when parking up i have looked for used ones but cannot find any so having to buy through dealer, ouch a bit pricey but what the hell.

There will be passes open allowing you to travel from country to country but some of the more interesting "high" passes may not be fully open.
I wonder what happen if I click on this - Ooops

And if you use the tunnels - they aren't half boring!
My imaginary friend thinks you've got serious problems.

Try the area around Como on the way. No duff roads in this part of the world.  Tortured a hire car last year over the road between St. Moritz and northern Como. From the north, Swiss 3 - Italian SS37/SS36. Take the right fork (western side) of the lake to Argegno, then the SP13 back road over the top to Lugano. Turn left at the lake and follow the road to the bottom end of Como. Would have given a months pay to swap the Hertz car for a bike. On a weekend, sit at a roadside cafe and listen to the exhaust sounds of big Italian V twins bouncing off steep mountain sides and lakes........magic.

thanks for that, i,m starting to get bogged down trying to work out routes from baden baden to lake garda.wife bought me a garmin for xmas but relised you cant download google maps to satnav and im not realy up to speed with mapsource etc, to be honest i think i will take the garmin but also use maps for day to day routes and satnav to get me out of trouble around cities or large towns. i could do with a crash course on the garmin.
