I think the 2610 are cheap as chips now, got mine over a year ago with full bike kit for ?150.
The only thing with this one it has a hard disk , and mine tends to cut out and reboot due to Vibration above 80-90 mph

The Garmin 2610 intended for bikes, had an upgradeable solid state memory.   It came with a 256 card.  A 1mg will hold the whole of Europe - they are cheap enough.
There was a Garmin bought out at the same time - 2611 I think - that was intended for cars.   This did have a hard disk.

My 2610 has worked well for six years.   I still have the original v6 maps - updated from the Garmin site.   It doesn't show many of the new roads but used with some thought it does me.

If I was buying a new GPS, the most important question would be the quality of the maps and how current they were.
I have been unable to find a web site that actually compares the maps of different systems.    I did ask for a demonstration in Halfords to no avail!
