I had a bit of a brainstorm last week and ordered a Garmin Zumo 500.

I haven't had a chance to use it on the bike yet but the first impressions (playing with it and using it in the car)  are very favorable. Very fast recalculation, stunning reception (it even works in my office or in the garage) and good Bluetooth performance synced with the Hands free phone kit in the car, Motorola earpiece and Blackberry (yeah I know, I'm a gadget freak  ::) ).

Once I've got it fully mounted and have used it for a bit I'll write a full report and post some photos.

Got fed up waiting so got one myself!

Just ordered the replacement "security" screw off the Zumo forum as it self tightens and you can't remove unit if you forgot the screwdriver  :uglystupid2:

More Spookyness

I have been meaning to write a review for a while.

I've been using mine in the car and on the bike. It packed up last night and will now have to go back to Garmin   :tickedoff:

Which model did you get ?

Believe the 500 is just UK and Ireland maps, 550 covers whole of Europe.

Owen....I suggest you get the 005 model.... it covers Shrewsbury and Clun.... ::)

The one i looked  at, The 550 warns you about going to Oxfordshireland, and some where called jockland,But the basic 500 doesn't , I wonder why not.   ::)

The 500 just gives spoken directions i.e turn left

The 550 has spoken street names i.e 'turn left onto Acacia Avenue'

Beware of any non UK Units. They should have the full european maps but for some reason the french units do not include the mounting bracket for a car.

...... because the French drivers think they always know best so there is no fecking point putting it into a car in the first place,...oh and they probably stink of Garlic as well!

For a while the UK Version (010-00567-20 ) included the Car mount. The Garmin website has now changed and it states 'Package contents may vary per version. See your local dealer for details.'

If you need a car mount its worth asking before you buy the system.

I bought a French unit (slightly cheaper) and then got the car mount and USA maps whilst on a trip to the USA where the base unit was much more expensive (there are now some good bargains on Amazon.com) but the accessories are cheaper.

If anyone wants a copy of the USA maps (without the activating code) drop me a pm.
