Having a resident mechanic and a oil industry consultant with him on the way home should lower the odds a bit.  Maybe they could be bribed to make sure he fails

Statistics tell us that the safest way to fly is with a bomb in your bag ( the chances of two bombs being on the same plane are miniscule).

Likewise having Dave along on a trip like this is a great comfort.
