Thanks for the reply Barker , the bike has been sat for about a week but started at once throughout so the old owner could show me it run , before that week it was used daily by the old owner with no starting problems he says. how do you mean  ground the spark plug on the cylinder and turn the starter motor , do you mean screw the spark plug back in and and try start the bike ? and check for spark. Thanks

You don't need to be looking rectifier/regulator if it's not starting. That may be something that needs looking at later.

Was the bike being used regularly before you bought it ?

If not how long has it been sitting ?

Try some contact cleaner into the kill switch if you think that made a difference before ??

Try to start it and then remove the front spark plug. See if it's very wet (too much fuel) or no smell of petrol (not enough fuel).

Ground the spark plug on the cylinder and turn it over on the starter. Is there a spark ?

Hey everyone , i just bought my first varadero 125 today, a 2008 plate and im chuffed. When it first arrived i went through the checks and gave her a start, it didnt fire straight away but it was cranking , after switching the kill switch on and off a few times the bike started and ran very happy , about an hour later after having cleaned the bike my mate came to see it and when trying to start it just wouldnt go , still cranking but not starting. i have checked the charge rate at the battery and it is reading 12.6 so enough to start although after a few attempts its now 12.4 so need to charge it. Ive heard the rectifier connecter on the 3 yellow wires can be shotty? how do i go about checking that , also how would i check the killswitch to see if that is bridging incorrectly and killing the bike . Ontop of that is there anything you guys would recmend to check, thanks for your time.        Matthew

I know this is a very old post, but if you are like me, you might be coming back here looking for information.

Let me tell you what I do if the FI light does not go out:

Put the sidestand down and back up - a couple of times.
Pull the clutch lever in.
On/Off the kill switch a couple of times.
Ignition off/on

Try again.

Last resort.. put bike in 2nd gear
Hold starter button down...
Release clutch MOMENTARILY and re-engage clutch immediately (not to be done facing a wall :D )

This normally works for me!

Interesting. This is almost the same noise that my 125 had before I took the engine apart. Turned out the camshafts and rocker arms were trashed; deep grooves, discolouring. The valve themselves seemed fine, although with quite a bit of carbon buildup.
Currently trying to find reasonably priced replacement parts...

10500 miles, model from 2003 I think.

I think the first step would be to drain the oil and see if there's any debris in there.
After that I'd look at the timing chain tensioner. Look up online how to check it, there is lots of good and easily digestible information on this topic on the net. They're relatively easy to access and if I recall correctly you can tension them manually with a flat screwdriver. Don't worry about reusing the old gasket for testing purposes, and if it doesn't leak simply don't replace it imo.
These are both things you can do at home. Taking the engine apart will of course require much more effort.

Check/charge/replace battery.
Check/adjust/replace spark plugs.
Try reducing spark plug gap, it might help if it's electrical issue.

I have similar issue with mine, 2004 carburetor model.
It is strange, but I noticed that cold start is better when the petrol tank is close to full,
which in my case might suggest fueling issue.

How is the  starter motor turning?
Bad, worn starter motor might be a reason for poor starting.
Have you tried to push start? Does it start immediately?

Could grab yourself som Mitas tires, as they're good quality for the price, or get a little fancy and use som Continentals or Michelins. It's pretty popular to put on some gravel/asphalt tires on, where they perform around 50% on gravel and 50% on asphalt, or perhaps you're only looking for asphalt driving, as that's alright too.

also been having alot of cold start isues since the weather has dipped in temp, got a new choke cable because the one on is quite worn out as a whole but any tips other than thats just a carbed engine would be nice :)
