Thanks, Just in case anyone else is looking at this post in the future I heard back from Honda today and the D51 is a Mosfet unit, the D21 is SCR so they are interchangeable but D51 is by far the better unit.

If you do a yahoo or google search with both part numbers you will find plenty of adds for replacements  Giving both parts No's

for example  :

https://www.electrostator.com/en/vf1000f-vf1000r-xl1000v-varadero/7940-regulator-rectifier-honda-xl1000v-varadero-oem-31600-mbt-d21-31600-mbt-d51.html

or

https://www.amazon.co.uk/CJLBHD-Rectifier-Regulator-31600-MBT-D21-31600-MBT-D51/dp/B09PTM6NMQ

Which suggests that they are completely interchangeable

Hi,

Having a few issues with my Reg/Rec on my 2008 XL1000VA (Canadian edition if that matters). I see alot of upgrade options for Mosfet for the older model part # 31600-MBT-D21. Honda Canada has part # 31600-MBT-D51 as the correct part number for by bike. Does anyone know if they're interchangeable? Not alot of knowledge over this side of the pond on the old girl and don't want to order another Honda unit if I don't have to. Thanks

If the engine stutters "like a missfire" or cuts in and out quickly I think it's reasonable to focus on the ignition system.

You mention "CDI OK, IGNITION COILS OK"   how were these tested ?

Spark plugs changed too, vacuum lines ok. The bike went to two bike mechanics and one bike electrician and nothing..
In this point i am tired of giving my money away and have no result and because I am a car mechanic I disassemble the cylinder heads to check the valves and pistons but i found nothing wrong.

125 Open Forum / Throttle response sag
Last post by Newnoob - 11/12/22 - 17:34:40
Hello everybody, I hope you are all well!
I am completely new to the motorcycle world at 28 years old and the varadero 125 is my introductory bike.
It is a 2001 model with 80.000 km on its back, in very nice condition.
The only problem I have after I bought it and procceded with the regular maintenance work- cab cleaning, filters etc- is that the throttle has a very sluggish response especially when reaching optimal temperature.

What's happening is that when I am, say at a stoplight, I rev the throttle to get to around 5k rpm so I can take off at a decent speed- you know how those bikes have to be treated to get some minimal juice out of them- BUT the throttle doesn't respond even with the clutch all the way enganged. I have to wait around 2 seconds before the engine revs up so I can hit enough rpm to be able to disengage the clutch and go.

Any advice or anyone that can share any similar experience and solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated as this is a very annoying thing when you want response on the road, as well as a safety issue potentially.
Best regards,
John

Hi I had the same problem trying to locate Givi pannier racks for my 2006 125 Varadero which is no longer made So I bought the 2007 pl202 racks and they fit perfectly Hope this helps it took around 3 hours to fit them has the pillion foot peg pins were rusted in and I had to cut them out with a junior hacksaw then drill them out

You don't mention if your plugs have been changed. Always worth a try as plugs and leads are often the cause of stuttering,
Also I would check vacuum lines. Sometimes faults with vacuums can be shown up by spraying carb cleaner around them when ticking over to see whether it changes the revs.
